On the other hand, it might grow into a thriving community with a diverse range of personalities, some of whom may have no qualms about speaking whatever is on their minds. To the dismay of the rest of the community, it may not be as culturally stimulating as one might think. Vulgar language and behavior are nothing new in an online group, particularly in a gaming setting. When dealing with keyboard warriors who believe their anonymity provides them immunity, racial slurs and vile words are practically expected. As the owner, it is your responsibility to regulate the chat environment, ensuring that members in your community feel safe and continue to contribute to its success. So, if you want to keep “bad words” out of Discord, there’s a Discord filter bot for that.
“Bad Words” are blocked by Discord Filter Bots.
You might have observed that Discord has an Explicit Content Filter built-in, so why would you need a bot to do the job? You must realise that the built-in feature was never intended to filter out certain terms from the discussion. Instead, it only controls or filters out photos and videos that may be deemed unfit for work (NSFW). It’s a good start, but it won’t protect your discussion from the occasional curse word because photos might include indecent and offensive information. A Discord filter bot will be required to filter out any language that you deem unacceptable in your community.
Discord Filter Bots for Profanity
There are numerous Discord filter bots that will remove any vulgarity that has been added to the “bad word blacklist.” Most of those same bots will typically come with a slew of extra features that a developing Discord group could find beneficial. We’ve included two of the most popular Discord filter bots, Nightbot and Dyno, which include a profanity filter as well as other community-building features. We’ll go over what the bot is all about, how to download and install it, and how to use the profanity filter.
For Discord: Nightbot
This bot will be known to everyone who is currently active on Twitch.tv. Nightbot is one of the better bots you can have for not only filtering out profanity but also for a variety of other functions, whether you’ve heard of it or are now using it. It comes with a number of chat commands and auto-moderation tools that you can use on your Twitch and YouTube channels, as well as your Discord server. You can use their blacklist tool to add any offensive terms or phrases you want to be removed from your chat. It can also prevent your chat community from being bombarded with excessive symbols, emotes, capital letters, links, copypasta, and other big annoyances. You’ll need a Twitch.tv or YouTube account to get Nightbot for your Discord server because it was initially built for usage with streamer chat. You will also require a Nightbot account. After you’ve completed these steps, you’ll be able to link your Nightbot account to your Discord account and add it to your server.
Navigate to the Integrations tab after logging into your Nightbot account with your Twitch or YouTube account. For this guide, we’ll use a Twitch account. To connect Nightbot to your Discord account, go to the Discord tab and click the Connect button. If you haven’t already done so, you’ll be prompted to join in to Discord. To allow the integration, click Authorize in the new window. Nightbot will now be ready to join a server, according to a new pop-up. At the top-right, click the Join Server button. An additional authorization window will appear. After selecting the server with which you want Nightbot to interface, click the Authorize button. You can also specify which permissions Nightbot should have on that host. Bots, in general, require a wide range of permissions to function properly, if at all, thus I’d leave those options alone. Suffer the reCAPTCHA by checking the “I’m not a robot” box and continuing. The next window will appear depending on the account you used to log into Nightbot (Twitch or YouTube). Because we’re using Twitch, you’ll be requested to create Discord roles that correlate to your Twitch channel’s roles. If you want to fill it out, click the Update button after you’re done, then dismiss the window. To work on Discord, Nightbot will need to be declared a moderator. To access the Spam Protection window, click the Filters icon from the left-hand menu. To the right of the Blacklist Words/Phrases filter, select Options. By default, it should be enabled. If you haven’t already, click the Enable button. In the Blacklist text area, type all of the terms and phrases you want Nightbot to filter from your Discord (and Twitch) discussion. You can also choose how long you want to timeout anyone who uses the phrases you’ve put to the list, as well as any role you believe is exempt from penalty. Click the Submit button when you’re finished.
Nightbot will now filter all words and phrases from your Discord chat channels that you added to the Blacklist. Those who use profanity from the Blacklist will be punished for the amount of time you specify.
Dyno
Dyno is a multi-purpose Discord filter bot with a simple and straightforward web dashboard that can be extensively customised. Dynobot includes an anti-spam/auto moderation filter that is quite helpful in removing vulgarity from your Discord discussion.
Sign in with your Discord credentials on the homepage. When you click the button, you’ll see the authorisation dialogue that you’re used to seeing. Select your server and click the Authorize button to proceed. Select the server for which you’d like to add Dynobot in the Manage Servers tab and complete the process. Scroll down to the Modules area of the Server Dashboard and activate Automod. Then select SETTINGS from the drop-down menu. Enter the words and phrases that need to be filtered under the Banned Words tab. When you’re finished, click Update. A default list of forbidden words has already been established. As needed, add more. Return to the Settings section. You can configure how Dynobot responds to anyone who uses vulgarity in chat. This features an automute function for anyone who types in ALL CAPS, creates duplicate content, or sends mass SPAM using one of the screened words.
